Epic’s Tim Sweeny Discusses Gears Content
The folks over at the 1UP Yours Podcast called up the Epic Games‘ founder and CEO Tim Sweeny to discuss Gears of War. During the interview, Tim mentioned some additional content coming up for Gears of War. They have an additional four maps that they have created and want to give away, but Microsoft is not seeing eye to eye with Epic Games. He also made mention of the upcoming Gears of War update, saying the update (that includes the new game type Annex) will be free, as we expected. But no date of release is currently known, as it’s still going through the certification process at Microsoft.
Here is the quote of what Tim had to say on the podcast:
With Gears of War we’ve gone through our own effort and built a bunch of different maps that are free for download. We already released two and we have four more maps that we’ve built. We’ve been willing to give them away for a long time, but actually Microsoft has been pushing back on us. They’re trying to build this business model around selling additional content for games and and that’s a valid idea, but we would definitely like to release more stuff for free, and we haven’t been able to do so yet, which is unfortunate, I mean there are a lot of good business reasons for releasing free content for a game. First of all you want to increase the player base and keep the game alive and the business reason, right now trade-ins of console games are a big issue. If people hold on to our game longer, or forever because we release more stuff over a time for free than that’s a good business incentive for us. But we haven’t been able to do that so far because of Microsoft’s business strategy around selling content.

Dude i have alot of respect for epic, they dont charge $120 AU for their games, and i got gow for $79 on release date. They have continouly provided content and they have made the best game on 360 to date, MS are absolute stooges i think they want people to play a game for 5 mins then give it to EB for 5 cents.. THERE IS NOT ENOUGH CONTENT IN CONSOLE GAMES, then later the devs come back and charge us the earth for 1 MAP! eg the lost planet maps.. 2 for 400 points? ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Epic should be choosing what they do, not microshit, M$ are money thieving bastards, they even charging $200 to repair a broken 360 out o warranty now.. what a joke.

Why is every NEW level download content 400 points ? Why not 100 points for levels?

Thats like $1.99 a map. A fricken meal at Burger King cost more and the meal you can’t play over and over. So everyone just relax and stop being so cheap.
The problem with all of this (read above to understand what i’m saying) is that people are that desperate for the additional content that slapping a price tag on it isn’t going to stop people from buying it.
Ideally, we’d all love the environment where additional content is free (wow, talk about gamer paradise), but it’s funny how people are up in arms about this like it’s some sort of renegade move by Microsoft. This isn’t the first time Microsoft has tried everything in its power to milk as much from the consumer as possible, and it certainly won’t be the last.
As long as the demand for the content is strong enough, it’s not going to be free, because if people want it that badly, money becomes expendable to most consumers in comparison to how much they want their additional content.

U know microsoft is not greedy for wanting to charge 5 bucks for some new maps!!! Think about it microsoft works hours and hours that we dont see to maintain live,so we can spend countless hours playing online.And ya we pay a fee (what 50 a year) thats noting compared to what they could charge.. They are always updating live and improving it and not charging to do it,ya i know our 50 bucks but think how much u spend on ur internet every month which is a lot lot more. And we dont see how much hard work that goes into keeping live up 24 hrs a day every day so we can sit there and spend countless hours on it.And what is the first thing everyone does to thank them,complain about having to pay 5-6 bucks once every couple months (COME ON).You should be complaining to Bush for our lovely gas prices.. Well said Andrew! I agree. People need to think that it actually takes hundreds of man hours for Epics developers (im guessing 15-20 of them), to plan, code, and create these maps. Some of these developers make about $30-40 an hour. If you do the math, it comes out to some serious cheese.
I commend Epic for wanting to release them for free and I seriously hope M$ cuts them the juicier portion of the profit (which I seriously doubt). If Epic continues to make games as SAVAGE and INTENSE as GOW, I will keep buying them and the content!

Even so, M$ does do alot of work on their system but THATS THEIR JOB and Epic does alot of work on updates but THATS THIER JOB. When Epic says that they want to release there new creations for free M$ should let them. I mean you all surf the internet and then you all should then understand that free trade of files sharing is almost expected. So when people get upset about having to pay they are in the wrong and when people get mad at people for not wanting to pay they too are in the wrong. The thing that everyone should be upset about is that M$ is trying to force developers to realease content you have to pay for. The point is Microsoft did not create the content so what gives them the right to charge us for it. I know most of the money will probably go back to Epic but Microsoft will definatley be making some sort of comition from MS Points. This only adds to my hope PS3 pulls it self out of the gutter because if Microsoft destroys the compition they will inevitably start releasing utter garbage that we will forced to buy (Windows) for lack of anything else. It reminds me of years ago when they were in trouble for throwing their weight around the smaller software developers. Yay PS3… I still won’t buy one but yay…

Well if you look close at the box, its rated M. So ther targeting Adults
this game is fucking awesome, so what if its 800 points, its worth it. i wont think twice about downloading them, thats what i did with the call of duty 2 maps even though they were alot. If you like the game buy the maps, your not poor, you have a 360. cheap bastards.

As some of you might recall, we took the MS fist up our asses already with Halo 2 and those sorry maps. I mean who likes gemini or backwash or whatever the fuck its called. I havent played h2 since GOW emergence DAY!! But still, why cant MS come to a mutual agreement with gamers?? They take care of cheaters (like they always promise) by finding them and eliminating them. NO WARNINGS, start dropping the BANHAMMA!!! if they can make the game better by ridding us of those damn MOOK cheaters, then I will pay more $$ for some maps. Next thing you know we have to break out the Credit card again just to play Halo 3 beta. Mark my words, you will end up spending for the BETA or have to buy some really shitty upgrade to assCRACKDOWN! I hate you MS, but I love your stanky juicy BOX!

Gears of War is a fantastic game and aditional content only extends the life of it. I’ve been playing this game for about 3 months now and I still can’t get over how great it is in every aspect. The graphics, game play, live service, and the fun you get from stomping on one’s head is overwhelmingly cool. If I have to pay for 4 new maps that may or may not live up to the original maps, I will. I’d spend more than $10 on 4 new maps if I have too. It’s like music; you pay for the musician’s art. You’re paying for the game designers art… It’s that simple. Alot of work went into this game and it’s the right thing to do.
Is may 9th official?? Where’d you hear that from? are they still making new weapons?

The thing that gets me is why not just ship the maps with the game. They could maybe prolong the game by releasing it a few months later and beef up the content in it. That way people play it longer. Of the two free maps I bought Raven Down:crappy Old Bones:Decent. Hope the two new ones are worth it.

well I love these new maps, they were well worth the money, I wish we get more gametypes and weapons in the future, I heard from someone who supposingly works at epic that they were releasing 2 new weapons soon, the flamethrower and a sword, would be nice

Even though the first Gears Of War that came out last year was the game of the month. I want Gears Of War 2 to even be better than Gears Of War. Gears Of War is awesome though. I hope in the next Gears Of War they add more choices of characters and a 8 on 8 online play or even 6 on 6. And I also hope they get rid of host advantage because that shit is gay! And I hope the storyline is even longer than it was in the first Gears of War.
